The BMI Formula
BMI (Body Mass Index) = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For example, at 170 cm and 65 kg, BMI = 65 ÷ 1.70² ≈ 22.5. BMI is a widely used international indicator of an adult's weight in relation to their height.
WHO BMI Categories for Adults
| BMI range | Category |
|---|---|
| < 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obesity class I |
| 35.0 – 39.9 | Obesity class II |
| ≥ 40.0 | Obesity class III |
Limitations of BMI
BMI only reflects the ratio of weight to height and cannot distinguish fat from muscle. It is not suitable for everyone: pregnant or breastfeeding women, very muscular athletes, and children or teenagers need dedicated assessment methods, and the ideal ranges may also differ for older adults and certain ethnic groups.
